What is ”Kodomo-no-Hi”？

"Kodomo-no-Hi" is a seasonal festival on May 5th with tradition to pray for the happiness and well-being of boys in Japan.
「こどもの日」は、5月5日に男の子の幸せと健康を願う日本の伝統行事です。

It's also called "Tango-no-Sekku".
「端午の節句」とも呼ばれています。

In 1948, this day was established as a national holiday”Kodomo-no-Hi”and started to include the well-being of all children, regardless of gender.
1948年に「こどもの日」として祝日に制定され、性別を問わず全ての子どもの幸せを願うようになりました。

How to celebrate Kodomo-no-Hi

Decoration | こいのぼりと兜

Outside their houses, families with boys fly and decorate carp-shaped streamers called "Koinobori".
男の子のいる家庭では、家の外に「こいのぼり」が飾られます。

These days, small Koinobori is available to fit Japanese houses.
最近では、日本の家に合うように、小さなこいのぼりも手に入ります。

Inside, they decorate with a samurai helmet and armor, hoping their son will grow up to be brave and strong.
家の中では、男の子が勇敢で強く育つようにと願いを込めて、武士の兜や鎧を飾ります。

The family with boys prepare special foods as ritual offerings.

Kashiwa-mochi is a steamed dumpling filled with sweet red bean paste and wrapped in an oak leaf.
柏餅は、柏の葉で包んだあんこ入りのおもちです。

The oak leaf symbolizes strength and is believed to protect the health and well-being of children.
